Skyzoo - The Salvation
Brooklyn native Skyzoo is on a mission to bring hip-hop back down to earth. His refreshing debut album titled The Salvation (off of Duck Down available 9/29) comes from a place of sincerity, which is something to be cherished these days. After releasing several mix-tapes, Skyzoo has finally come into his own and created an autobiographical body of work, “The moment you pick up a pen or start rhyming as a kid, all you think about is getting an album out. This album isn’t exactly the way I planned it out at 9-years-old, but it tells my story. With that being said, no one can help tell my story better than me. The Salvation is about me.”
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> This refreshing honesty is backed by a both impressive and promising group of producers. In an industry that preys on one big star till their flame has burnt out, star power collaborations are key. But Skyzoo disagrees, placing quality before a big name, “it wasn’t really a ‘who’s hot, who’s not’ type of thing. It was more so ‘just get what sounds right. I got a lot of big name producers, and I also got a lot of up and comers.” This group of producers includes 9th Wonder, Just Blaze, Nottz, Cyrus tha Great, and Best Kept Secret (who works with Wale).
<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->The Salvation touches on both the concept of personal storytelling as well as commentary on the flaws of the industry. The catchy track “Popularity” sheds light on the shallow side of the industry, while still delivering an uplifting and withstanding beat. Skyzoo continues the motif of authenticity with track 2, “Return of the Real,” which has a more layered texture and a beat that hypes up the beginning of the album. But there are also more sentimental tracks like “For What It’s Worth,” which takes the listener into the thoughts of a young and hopeful MC. The Salvation’s eclectic production and honest perspective is sure to revitalize those weary of the same old money driven singles.
