Slick Watts Interview
Sometimes looks can deceive you at first glance of Ohio's own Slick Watts. The quiet and humble looking Watts from Columbus, Ferry region of Ohio at first glance does not look like the Raw pressure cooker he really is, but when the Mic is on and booth door closes its a very different story. You then see why Slick Watts went on to win Best Midwest Artist at the Underground Music Awards (NYC) in 2009 and his music is a frequent on Websites. We take a few minutes inside Slicks crazy schedule to see what Slick is up too why he should be on everyone's radar.
BRM- State ya name and what city and state you're from?
Slick-Slick Watts Martins Ferry Ohio (aka the O.V)
BRM- What inspired you to get into hip hop?
Slick-I've always loved music. Listening to different artist growing up like Nas and Pac and being able to identify with some of the things that they were saying. Especially Pac. His energy and how he never bit his tongue really inspired me to pick up a pen and start writing. Also my older brother (R.I.P) was into the break dancing and stuff like that. So I was around it as a young kid.
BRM- What is WattsyMusic, please give us a summary.
Slick- WattsyMusic is my entertainment company. Basically everything that I'm involved with will have the WattsyMusic brand behind it. Our Slogan is "This is WattsyMusic. Please do not confuse it." When I first started out my career I was involved in a few other situations with individuals. And this was my way of breaking away from them and saying "Don't confuse what I'm doing with what was going on" This is something fresh and brand new. It also helps that my brother Major League and I both have the last names of Watts. So it just fit.
BRM- coming from the Midwest where many artist usually pack up and head to
either Chicago, Atl or Ny why did u feel the need to stay close to home?
Slick-It's not that I felt a need to stay close to home. It just kind of happened that way. I think it's very important to lock your city down. Which I have done. And at the same time it's very important to be known in other places as well. The internet and sponsorships have helped a lot in that aspect. For example, having Stall and Dean as my official clothing partner, has done wonders for my career. I've built so many relationships because of that in NYC. Also the internet. I've had songs or videos on AllHipHop.com, HipHopGame.com, WorldStarHipHop.com and other major sites. So those things
go hand in hand.
BRM- Give me your biggest record to date (Street or commercial success)?
What inspired the song?
Slick-Regionally my biggest song to date was "I Need Cake". That one is kind of self explanatory. I need cake (aka I need money) haha. Shout out to paramount and Mastermind beats who produced and had a hand in making that record happen. Locally my biggest song to date is a song called "Oski Woski" I never pushed it regionally. It's a party record (kind of goofy) but the people back home loved it. I didn't want to come into the game off a song like that. You never know though. I might revamp it and put it out later.
BRM- The State is ripe with talent, but after Bones Thug and Harmony, it has been on a hiatus for Ohio. Why do you feel Ohio has been overlooked and what can be done to assist exposing the local artist?
Slick-I think every region has their turn. I don't necessarily feel we've been overlooked. Right now it seems like it's the Midwest turn again. So I'm just glad to be a part of that. I definitely feel local artist sometimes depend on somebody else to jumpstart their career. If your working hard and putting your all into it. Things will fall into place. You can't just sit around for a handout. Get out there and get your own thing poppin.
BRM- In fact, let's start here. Give me some of the hottest artist and records in the state that "us" outside of Ohio is missing, add a female too if possible.
Slick- I think Cleveland has a lot of good things going on up there. Of course Chip the Ripper was just on Kid Cudi's new album. So that's definitely a good look for him and the state. Machine Gun Kelly just won the
Apollo in NYC like three times. A cat from Columbus, Ohio who now is Locatedin NYC Mekka Don. He got a hot single out as well. There's so much talent in the state but that's just a few right there. Oh and I like that 513rd record
by Young Dunny Produced by Hi-Tek.
BRM- You have had great success with the awards winning Underground music award Best Male artist, and you have been getting a lot of love from brands, what do you think told them "Slick" is that man?
Slick-The brands have been a blessing. I just think that they see this is my life. We put a lot of time and effort into our movement. Whether it is on the internet, or in the streets. I thank my manager and the work that she puts in behind the scenes is rare in the music industry today. It's really a time consuming job.Anybody who thinks you just wake up one day and it all clicks is crazy. That's maybe a 1 in a million chance. You got to put the work in. I think winning the award touches on your question of getting out there in other states. That award has put a lot of new people onto Slick Watts.
BRM- 2010 is coming rapidly on us, what do you have in store for 2010 or is it too early?
Slick-My Street album will be dropping January 15th. One of my 1st singles is a big record with "Mike Jones" We're taking it to the next level with this album. I'm throwing a concert with Mike Jones and after party to celebrate the release of the CD. 2010 will be a very big year for me. First and foremost you can look for Slick Watts music to be on the radio and in all the clubs! Also check for me in the magazines, throwing concerts throughout Ohio, Bringing big artist in and pushing the WATTSYMUSIC BRAND.
BRM- Drop a Gem for that up and coming rapper so he can start his career off on the right track.
Slick-Build relationships!! Always ask questions and take notes. There's a reason that most people are in the position they are in. Be humble, nobody wants to be around somebody who's cocky all day. My coach used to tell me "It takes no special talent to work hard". That's why average artist with a real love and grind for the music like myself can be successful!
