Beck’s Record Club
Lately Beck has been a busy man, getting ready to release a slew of new and innovative projects for his website, with the help of some very talented friends. Beck.com is currently being revamped to make room for some new sections, the first to be launched is called the Record Club.
With the aid of folks like Devendra Banhart, MGMT and Jamie Lidell, groups of musicians will collaborate and cover notable albums of the past. What makes the project so exciting is that the whole thing will be improvised, on a time crunch. This means without any sort of rehearsal or preparation, these creative heads will join and the album in its entirety will be recorded in a single day.
Due to the quick, spontaneous nature of the recording, the revisioned albums will “be covered and used as a framework for the proceedings,” according to a press release for the Record Club. Single tracks from these sessions will be taken and posted once a week to the website, along with the sites of participating musicians.
Curious about the first album chosen to get the ball rolling? Everyone currently involved for the first go of it (including Chris Holmes, Nigel Godrich, and Joey Waronker to name a few) decided on The Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico, with Digital Underground's Sex Packets coming in as a close second. The first release “Sunday Morning,” is now available on the website, along with some raw video footage of the recording session itself!
Make a visit to beck.com to check it out, and for further details and future additional tracks.
